Oh I see - I was a bit sow there. You may be right on that. Clicks over-ride self-flagellation. What a state, eh?

You are a braver man than me re the cartoons. One of those where the pragmatism trumps the philosophy for me on the basis that publishing, sadly, puts innocents in danger.

Resect the purity of your thought though.

Sorry I missed the cartoon part.

Of course.

You asked "I do wonder why the BBC would proactively release a story that is likely to open up more criticism than praise of it though?"

I was giving an answer. One very plausible answer is rage clicks.

I wasn't asking whether you would ban them. I was pointing to a click bait article.

I just saw another on the their front page.

"Is it still OK to read Harry Potter?" complete with stock photo picture and question headline.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/5DdBBnrBnQt6vD2pVjZFs1Z/is-it-still-ok-to-read-harry-potter

If you want to promote a real discussion about Rowling's gender identity statements, that is not how you headline. It is how you get a click and nothing else from Potter fans. Not journalism.

No I wouldn't ban those.

One for you - would you publish the Jyllands-posten cartoons?

Not sure what your point is about rage clicks by the way.

Re: The BBC just get worse.
Wouldn’t be surprised that in a few years time the likes of the BBC ban all Christmas songs and mention of the festivities, after all various councils both in the UK and other western countries have done so, on the basis that it offends non Christians or alienates those of other religions.

Everyone is missing the saddest fact of all......

.....it can't be re-recorded by one of the original singers

I didn't particularly like Kirsty MacColl but it was a fucking tragedy how she was killed.

You know what a rage click is, right? Goes back to the title of the thread. As I also mentioned initially.

Look at one of the links

Should we stop listening to these Christmas songs?

Wokists have zero self awareness, so I would have thought it was obvious why they released the story themselves.

Far/Irons

Yes it does seem to have emanated from the BBC - or at least that is the fullest version of the story out there. It also mentions the age of listeners as a reason behind the decision which has been discussed on here.

I do wonder why the BBC would proactively release a story that is likely to open up more criticism than praise of it though?

The first I saw of it was on their site. And I try to look a number of different places

A cursory news search of articles refers back the quotes in the BBC release.

I'm inclined to take the song writer's view.

McColl refused to sing the lyrics at live performances and The Pogues has this to say: https://twitter.com/poguesofficial/status/1329394157354446850?s=20

Irons.
Though my political views have softened over the years (a smug. centrist, hypocrite, cunt as Chilled says), I have been pretty consistently opposed to censorship throughout.

I think the difference between us is probably that I view BBC's decision - as far as it goes - as a possibly ill-conceived though probably well-intentioned move rather than insidious state censorship.

Society is going through rapid change and people and organisations are struggling to keep up with it. Decisions are increasingly being made in haste bypassing proper consideration. There is a rush toward 'doing the right thing' without stopping to think what the right thing actually is.

What is also interesting about the BBC and Fairytale is how the news broke. I could be wrong but I doubt the BBC announced it. Some agenda playing out here possibly. Either that or a smart news agency has been looking at the calendar and coming up with the seasonal 'lefties cancel Christmas' line.

Re: The BBC just get worse.
Any cunt still listening to Radio 1 deserves all they get.

If this is BBC policy in general then surely they can play the unedited version after the 9pm watershed? If not then can we assume that the words 'slut' and 'faggot' get edited out of all themes, dramas etc?

Load of bollox over nothing.

Fo the Communist 7:36 Fri Nov 20

I went from socialist (really communist before I knew better) to hard conservative in my very early political development. So I was for censoring lots of things at one point.

I see the progressive left presently as very akin the American religious right in the those days in what they want to censor.

Living life and going to many progressive schools has made me value individual choice and the fostering of others making good choices through logic/free press etc. (original Whiggish idea of liberal) rather than there being a right way we need to enforce on others.
